I think Carlisle is kind of selfish. He "saves" people by cursing them and ultimately they are bound to him. He gains his family by cursing people. Only in the Twilight universe is becoming a vampire a good thing. In other vampire stories I've read good vampires never want to make other vampires. Vampirism is a curse they don't want to share even if they have accepted their own fate. Carlisle deals out the curse like a pill he gives to patients without thinking if he should let the person die. He plays God too much.
